In many cases - especially when kids or elderly people are involved - one trait in particular might come in handy: mellowness. A mellow dog is down for whatever life throws his way. He’s chill and calm, amiable and gentle. If you’re interested in potentially taking home a mellow pup yourself, check out the following breeds that are known for their particular brand of placidness, according to the American Kennel Club.
1. Bulldogs
The Bulldog is one of the most popular breeds in the United States, and for good reason. Known for their calm and friendly demeanor, Bulldogs are a favorite among families with children since their lovable and gentle dispositions blend well with little kids. Bulldogs are also relative couch potatoes, meaning their activity level is low, so not too much exercise is needed to keep them happy.
2. Clumber Spaniels
Gentle and playful, this loving breed is another favorite for families. The Clumber Spaniel not only loves kids but tends to get along well with other animals, too, making them a great addition to a home that already has pets. This breed can be standoffish with strangers, though, so be mindful of your Clumber when new people come to visit and consider proper socialization and training.
3. Great Danes
Don’t let their large size and strong physical stature fool you, Great Danes are known as “gentle giants” for a reason. This breed is calm and loving and they make excellent family pets. Loyal companions, the Great Dane also does well with other animals when raised together. The breed tends to make for a great watchdog, too, since their size can be intimidating and they are prone to barking with a loud, deep tone when strangers approach.
4. English Mastiffs
Although another domineering breed in size and stature, the powerful Mastiff is gentle, sweet-tempered and loyal. They love being around people and tend to bond very closely with their families. Remember to train your Mastiff early, though, since they are very protective of their domains and may become overly aggressive to strangers or outsiders visiting the home.
5. Saint Bernards
Saint Bernards are powerful and muscular dogs with mellow temperaments. Friendly and patient, the Saint Bernard is yet another breed that generally does well with children. They require daily exercise and regular grooming to stay healthy, but their easy-going attitudes mean they work well in most settings, whether it’s ambling around the countryside or chilling in the city.
6. Neapolitan Mastiff
Calm and steady, the Neapolitan Mastiff may be known for its mellow attitude but its massive and powerful size makes it best suited for dog owners with previous experience who can handle a dog of this size. The breed is loyal and loving of its family, but they do tend to do better with older children. Because they are a great protector of their domain, they make for great watchdogs, too, but will need early training to avoid any problems with visitors or strangers who appear intimidating to them.
7. Xoloitzcuintli
The Xoloitzcuintli is known to be loyal, calm and alert - a dog whose sole mission in life is to be your companion. Popularly referred to as the “Mexican hairless dog,” the Xolo comes in toy, miniature and standard sizes and despite the nickname of “hairless,” most are actually born with a light coating of hair.
